Updated yesterday

AHA Blended Course

Use this playbook when you teach AHA HeartCode blended courses, where students:

  • Complete the AHA online portion, then

  • Attend an in-person skills session through Hovn.

This guide walks you through setting up the online material, blended course, and skills sessions so students know exactly what to do — and you can issue certifications through the AHA eCard Connection.

What You’ll Accomplish

By the end of this setup, you will have:

  • A Material for the AHA online portion

  • A Course Offering using the correct HeartCode blended course

  • One or more Sessions for the in-person skills check

  • A smooth flow from registration to certification

Before You Start

Make sure you already have:

  • At least one Instructor profile set up

  • At least one Location created for skills sessions

How AHA Blended Works in Hovn

What Hovn handles

  • Directing students to the AHA online portion in the Student Portal

  • Managing skills session rosters

  • Storing grades and required files

  • Submitting rosters to AHA through the eCard Connection

What you do

  • Add the HeartCode online Material

  • Create a blended Course using the correct catalog preset

  • Create Sessions for the in-person skills component

Step 1 — Add the Online HeartCode Material

Start by adding the blended learning portion.

  • Go to Materials

  • Click + Material

  • Search for the correct HeartCode product

    • Example: HeartCode BLS Online

  • Set the price you charge for the online portion

    • If marked Required, this is added to the course fee

    • Example: $50 course + $100 HeartCode = $150 total

  • Click Save

You now have a reusable HeartCode Material for any blended class.

If students purchase their own keycode

  • Choose a Material ending in – Purchase Link

  • Hovn still delivers instructions, but the student pays AHA directly.

If you issue keycodes

  • Go to Materials

  • Select HeartCode BLS Online

  • Click + Keycodes

  • Paste your keycodes and save

Hovn will automatically deliver keys to students after registration.

Step 2 — Create the AHA Blended Course

Now build the course itself.

  • Go to Courses

  • Click + Course

  • Select the blended learning course:

    • HeartCode BLS Online – Provider

  • Set the price for the skills portion

  • Confirm the class structure:

    • Duration

    • Modality

    • Grading rubric

  • Attach your HeartCode Material

  • Set Material Policy to Required (Waivable)

  • Save

Step 3 — Schedule the Skills Session

Create sessions for the in-person portion.

  • Go to Sessions

  • Click + New Session

  • Select your blended course

  • Choose the Location

  • Assign an Instructor

  • Set open seats

  • (Optional) Assign to a client for private groups

  • Set date, time, and registration cutoff

Your blended skills sessions are now live and ready for registration.

What Students Experience

After registering:

  • They receive a confirmation email directing them to the Student Portal

  • They see:

    • The course with date, time, and location

    • The HeartCode Material with access instructions

  • They complete the online portion on AHA’s site

  • They attend the skills session with proof of completion

  • You issue their certification through the AHA eCard Connection

Troubleshooting & Common Issues

  • Students can’t find the online portion

    • Confirm the HeartCode Material is attached to the course

  • Forgot to attach the material

    • Reopen the course and add it under Materials

  • Keycodes not delivered
