ARC Blended Learning Course

Step-by-step guide to setting up American Red Cross blended learning courses in Hovn, from online access to roster submission.

Updated this week

Use this playbook to set up an American Red Cross blended learning course where students complete the online portion through ARC and attend an in-person skills session with you.

Hovn delivers ARC access links directly through the student portal, so learners don’t have to hunt through their email.

When to Use This

Use this guide when you need to:

  • Create a blended ARC course (online + in-person skills)

  • Deliver ARC online access through Hovn

  • Bundle materials at checkout

  • Streamline roster submission and eCard delivery

What Success Looks Like

By the end of this setup, you’ll have:

  • ARC online access links delivered to students automatically

  • Materials bundled correctly at checkout

  • A blended course structure in Hovn

  • Instructors able to verify student progress in ARC

  • Rosters submitted and eCards issued smoothly

Overview & Prerequisites

Before you begin, make sure you have:

  • Access to the ARC Partner Portal (listed as an Admin under your LTP agreement)

  • The specific ARC blended course you plan to offer (for example, BLS or ALS)

  • A reusable ARC online access link

  • A Material in Hovn that delivers that link

  • A Course Offering that includes both:

    • Online self-paced segment

    • Instructor-led segment

Step 1 — Configure the ARC Online Access Link

Start in the ARC Learning Center.

  • Log in to the ARC Learning Center

  • Click Request Online Class

  • Select your organization

  • Search for the correct blended learning product

    • Example: Basic Life Support Blended

  • Choose an end date (recommended: December 31 of the current year)

  • Enter a high number of learners

    • ARC does not charge per seat

  • Submit as a $0 transaction

  • Copy the generated URL

Tip: Use the same link all year. Request a new one next year to keep records clean.

Step 2 — Add the ARC Online Access Material in Hovn

Now deliver that ARC URL through Hovn.

  • Go to Materials → Add a Material

  • Select the American Red Cross version of the course

    • Example: ARC BLS Online

  • Leave the price at $0

  • Let Hovn auto-fill the title and instructions

  • Paste the ARC URL into the Access Link field

  • Click Save

Hovn will now deliver this material automatically to every student in their portal.

Step 3 — Create the Blended Course Offering

You’re ready to build the course.

  • Go to Courses → Create a Course

  • Choose the ARC blended base course

  • Set your course price

  • Under Class Structure, confirm two segments appear:

    • Online self-paced

    • Instructor-led

  • Attach the ARC Online Material from Step 2

  • Set the Material Policy to Included

  • Set the status to Published

  • Save

Students will now see the ARC online course included at checkout, with access delivered automatically after registration.

Step 4 — QA the Experience

Before going live, run a quick test:

  • Create a test session (public or private)

  • Enroll a test student (use your own email)

  • Confirm the ARC material appears in the student portal

  • Click the ARC link to make sure it launches

  • In the ARC portal, check Manage Online Classes to confirm the learner is tracked

Step 5 — Instructor Workflow

Once live, the flow looks like this:

  • Sessions are published for the blended course

  • Students register and receive ARC access in their portal

  • Instructors verify completion in ARC Manage Online Classes

  • Instructors run the in-person skills session

  • Records are submitted and eCards issued through Course Record Entry

Troubleshooting & Edge Cases

Common issues to check:

  • Students can’t find the ARC link

    • Confirm the material is attached and marked Included

  • The link expired

    • Request a new ARC online access link

  • The material wasn’t added to the course

    • Reattach it in the course settings

Success Checklist

Use this to confirm everything is set up correctly:

  • ARC online class requested and link copied

  • Material created in Hovn with the ARC URL

  • Course created with online + instructor-led structure

  • ARC Online material marked Included

  • Test session confirmed link delivery

  • Instructor confirmed learner appears in ARC portal
