Step 2: Create a Course

Create and publish your first real class in Hovn.

Updated this week

Goal

Create and publish your first real class in Hovn.

Total Time

About 15 minutes

Outcomes

By the end of this step, you’ll have:

  • A Location (where you teach)

  • A Material (the item students need for their class)

  • A Course (your packaged offering)

  • A Session (date/time students can register for)

👉 This is the fastest way to reach value: you’ll leave Step 2 with a class ready to go live.

1. Add a Location

Intro to Locations

Locations in Hovn are a powerful tool for Local SEO, class discovery, and organization. Start by creating the primary location where you offer classes.

Steps

  1. Go to Locations → Add Location

  2. Enter street address (Hovn will autocomplete with Google Maps)

  3. Add a Label + Arrival Instructions

  4. Set Discoverable ON so it shows on city rollups

  5. Save

We are using an AHA Instructor-Led BLS Class for this example. We recommend starting with your most popular class to learn the system.

2. Add a Material

Intro to Materials

Materials are items students need to complete a course—keycodes, links, eBooks, or PPE. They’re delivered in the student portal with clear instructions so students complete their requirements.

To start, we’ll add the BLS eBook.

Steps

  1. Go to Materials → Add Material

  2. Search for your material from the dropdown
    Example: “BLS Provider Manual eBook”

  3. Set your price for the material

  4. Save

Note: A material is created once and then attached to each course that uses that material.

3. Create a Course Offering

Intro to Courses

Courses are the foundation of Hovn. A Course Offering is your template for the price, structure, materials, and rules for a course that you teach. You then schedule Sessions (times & location) for that Course.

To start, we’ll add the AHA BLS Provider Course.

Steps

  1. Go to Courses → Add Course

  2. Select a Base Course from the agency catalog
    Example: “BLS”

  3. Set your default seat price

  4. Attach your materials
    Example: “BLS Provider Manual eBook”

  5. Set your material policy
    Example: “Required (waivable)”

  6. Confirm course segments

  7. Save & Publish

Note: Courses with “2020” indicate the 2020 Guidelines. Courses without a year are the current Guidelines.

4. Schedule Your First Session

Intro to Sessions

Sessions tie a Course to a specific date, time, and location so students can register.

Steps

  1. Go to Sessions → New Session

  2. Select a Course

  3. Select a Location

  4. Assign instructor(s) (or leave TBD)

  5. Choose date/time + registration cutoff

  6. Save

Note: Public sessions appear on your site; Private sessions stay hidden but can be shared by link.

Student Experience

Once your class is published, learners will see:

  • Course information on your Hovn Provider Page

  • Course confirmation email plus two session reminders (7 days & 24 hours)

  • Student portal with course info and materials (keycodes, ARC links, eBooks, etc.)

  • Certification delivery after the class

  • Student profile with certification storage

  • Certification reminders at 90, 60, 30, 7, and 1 day before expiration

Next: Go-Live

After creating your first class and scheduling your first session, you’re ready to go live. In the next step, you’ll connect your website, connect your card banks, and run your first session.
